Being with Luci these past few days has been like a dream come true. He is everything I had hoped and more. I've even eased up on bullying that maddening spouse of his, however much she may deserve it.
Serena still seems to think Luci will grow bored and, if not leave, then become distant toward her. I'm quite surprised she doesn't seem to see me as competition. Perhaps she thinks her husband is merely humouring me. She clings to him, yes, yet she still requires her others. Suppose one of them were to demand her exclusivity? She has many talents, but the ability to remain monogamous is not among them.
Notice I did not use the word "faithful". I did not comprehend it before, but now, being on the inside, as it were, I believe there to be a distinction between faithfulness and monogamy. Luci and Serena have a wholly open marriage. They tell each other everything and Serena will honour Luci's veto of any of her lovers. She's at his beck and call without question. That shows her faithfulness to him. Similarly, were she to veto any of his lovers, I do believe he would respect her preference, which makes him faithful to her. This is despite the fact they are clearly not monogamous.
On the other hand, Freya and I were monogamous, aside from a few actions taken by Nathaniel and Trent. Yet with the questionable gift of hindsight, I can see that neither of us was faithful to the other. I had eyes for Luci, against her wishes, and she had eyes for Nathaniel, which I'd not have cared about had she not made such a fuss over Luci. Then there was the fact that Trent assaulted me, and my "darling" wife seemed more concerned about whether I'd enjoyed it! I say, what madness is that? She also clearly took umbrage to me soliciting Serena's services-- as a joke, mind! I wonder what the D.L. was thinking, playing matchmaker for us? Hadn't he better things to do? Why stake my life upon marrying her, and deprive me of a perfectly agreeable wife and our children? Constance certainly wasn't as exciting as Freya, but she tolerated Dorian well enough, and she'd have tolerated Luci, I do believe.
Luckily for me, the D.L. said nothing of divorce.
